Principles of Organic Chemistry: Structures, Properties, and Nomenclature

Who Should Attend

This two-day course is designed for anyone whose job involves working with or analyzing organic chemicals.  The course is well suited to people who are new to organic chemistry, lab workers who may not have formal training in organic chemistry, or managers and supervisors who need a refresher course.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this course, attendees will:

  • Learn how different types of chemical bonding determine important molecular properties
  • Find out what makes carbon unique
  • Understand why hydrocarbons are so important
  • Discover what alcohol, anesthetics, and adhesives have in common
  • See how polymers are put together, and why they are so ubiquitous
  • Learn to name, draw, and understand organic molecules
  • Be more confident when discussing organic chemical ideas with colleagues

Course Description

This course is a comprehensive 2-day introduction to the field of Organic Chemistry.  Emphasis is placed on what determines chemical structures, and how chemical structure determines the important physical and chemical properties of a molecule.  This knowledge is then applied to a variety of economically important chemical families including hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones, carboxylic acids, amines, and polymers.  After taking this course, attendees will be able to draw chemical structures, write their names properly, and understand why organic molecules have specific properties.  In-class exercises and homework are used to increase the retention of knowledge.
